One of my favorite hikes on the island of Oahu is the Lanikai Pillboxes Hike. The hike in itself isn’t very long or difficult, but is all the more beautiful. It takes only about 20 minutes to reach the first pillbox and another 5 minutes to reach the second one. Throughout the entire hike, ocean breezes and endless views will accompany you. You will be able to see all of Kailua and Lanikai. From the second lookout you will even be able to see the beautiful bay of Waimanalo with its endless mountain ranges. It’s the perfect hike for all ages. If your looking to have a family excursion, or wanting to go with friends or a special someone there is no better hike. Tip: Going early to see the sunrise.
If you’re coming from town you will take the H1 freeway and then take the exit Pali Highway (HI-61 N). Continue on the Pali Highway until you reach Kailua Road. Continue on Kailua Road until you reach Kalaheo Avenue. Turn right on Kalaheo Avenue, and continue on Kawailoa Road. After driving past Kailua Beach Park you will come to a four way stop sign, where you will take a left which will take you straight into Lanikai. Continue on Alapapa Road and take the first right into Kaelepulu Drive. You should see the Mid-Pacific Country Club parking lot to your right and the access to the Lanikai Pillboxes Hike on your left. There is no direct parking available for hikers, so your best chance would be to find parking in the neighborhood of Lanikai and walking to the trailhead. Or if you’re feeling risky you could park at the Mid-Pacific Golf Course at your own risk.
